Reverse Osmosis

H2O Under Control

Reverse osmosis is a technology which is used universally to eliminate contaminants from your incoming water supply and prepare your animal drinking water for further purification, if required. Edstrom RO products have proven effective in removing up to 99.99% of all organics, particulates, ions/metals, micro-organisms and bacteria from your incoming water supply, ensuring standardized water quality that is less dependent on your facility's location, water source, or seasonal variations..

The Indigo RO is a modular water purification system with advanced capabilities and modern, user-friendly features. Its modular design makes it simple to expand your system as research needs grow. Indigo produces more water with fewer membranes – up to 1,267 gallons per day with one Polyamide (PA) membrane and up to 5,500 gallons/day with four PA membranes. Indigo’s water recovery rate is 50 percent, which is above the industry average. The Indigo RO offers a complete graphical view of the entire water production system from its user-friendly touchscreen display. With a simple touch of the screen, you can easily access valuable information, including water tank level, permeate conductivity, and water percent rejection. The Indigo RO is regulatory compliant: ETL Listed, Conforms to UL 61010-1, FCC47 CFR PT 15-B, Certified to CAN/CSA STD C22.2 NO. 61010-1, CE.

The Edstrom RO8600 serves large facilities by producing up to 7,452 gallons/day with a PA membrane. The 8600 automates daily log calculations like normalized differential pressure, permeate conductivity, percent rejection, post chlorine, and pH. The 8600’s controller can monitor current operating parameters, such as temperature and pressure, from any networked PC.

The RO250A is designed to meet requirements for either a standard flushing or a recirculation system. When the system calls for water, the RO supplies the water as required.

The Edstrom RO100 is a reverse osmosis water purification system designed specifically to provide contaminant-free water for laboratories and animal research facilities. The RO100 effectively removes contaminants which add uncontrolled variables to your research and can adversely affect animal health. The system provides up to 100 gallons per day of contaminant-free water, at a constant flow rate, for a variety of laboratory functions. The RO100 is ideally suited for an Edstrom recirculation-type Automated Watering System.

  • Animals have access to clean, fresh water on demand – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Saves time and labor by reducing or eliminating your reliance on water bottles, allowing you to utilize staff in smarter ways.

  • Reduces ergonomic risks by removing all the heavy lifting, bending, twisting and turning associated with the labor-intensive bottle process.

  • Every Edstrom drinking valve is specifically designed, precisely manufactured, expertly calibrated, and individually tested to ensure animal safety.

  • Our unique Reverse “S” manifold design is a continuous section of pipe with no dead legs or places for bacteria to hide, allowing for thorough water exchange.

  • Complete monitoring of the automated watering system verifies performance and keeps all parameters under control, safeguarding your research animals and studies.

  • Reduces micro-environment intrusions.

revos-moreSuppress Biofilm Formation with Reverse Osmosis
RO machines are key in managing biofilm development in watering systems. Biofilm is a collection of bacteria surrounded by slime. These slime cities thrive wherever there is water. Biofilm bacteria have sticky polymers that hold it together and cement it to a pipe wall. These bacteria can cause infection and disease in laboratory animals. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one such bacteria that can infect animals with suppressed immune systems. Biofilm is also responsible for corroding pipes, clogging water filters, and the rejection of medical implants. Unfortunately biofilm cannot be prevented or eliminated, but it can be managed. Water purification can help. Reverse osmosis provides nutrient-poor water, which supports less biofilm than regular tap water, resulting in a thinner, less harmful biofilm.

revos-more1How Reverse Osmosis Works
Reverse osmosis is a water purification process in which water is forced by pressure through a semi- permeable membrane. In normal osmosis, water flows from a less concentrated solution through a semi-permeable membrane to a more concentrated solution (see Figure 1). Reverse osmosis uses pressure to reverse normal osmotic flow. Water flows from a more concentrated solution through a semi-permeable mem- brane to a less concentrated solution.

revos-more2Permeate and Concentrate Flows
The feedwater to the reverse osmosis system flows over the surface of the membrane and a percentage of the water is forced through by pressure. This is purified water or permeate. The remaining water, concentrate, retains the rejected contaminants and is drained. The percentage of feedwater that is recovered as permeate, called percent recovery, is typically 50 percent. The other 50 percent is drained.
