How it works:
The Valve
The sealing force in Edstrom nipple waterers comes from a silicone rubber diaphragm, which provides the necessary pressure for keeping the valve closed. This prevents water from flowing under the stem head and out of the nipple. Water is dispensed only when the pig moves the stem by biting on it. One side of the stem head lifts off the o-ring, allowing water to flow under it and out to the animal. When the pig releases the end of the stem, the elasticity of the silicone rubber diaphragm pushes the stem head back to the closed position, stopping the flow of water.
The System
Incoming water to the system travels first through a filter and then through the pressure regulator to reduce pressure to approximately 15 psi. Next, water crosses through the distribution piping and down to the nipple waterer for access by the hogs. The Filter/Pressure Regulator Station has a capacity of 10 gallons per minute (GPM) and can supply up to 100 hog nipples or 200 piglet nipples.
Components:
Nipple Waterers
Edstrom Industries offers eight models of nipples, all made from 303 grade stainless steel.
Hog Nipple
Designed for use by pigs 50 pounds and up. Calibrated to discharge 1.5 quarts per minute at 40 psi.
Sow Nipple
High-capacity nipple especially designed for use by breeding stock. Calibrated to discharge 2.5 quarts per minute at 40 psi.
Sow Trainer Nipple
A special version of the Edstrom Sow Nipple, it has a stainless steel trainer-screw built into the body. By turning in the screw, the nipple can be set to drip slowly, which helps teach sows not accustomed to using nipple waterers to find the water source. Use on reduced water pressures of 15 to 20 psi.
Piglet Nipple
Designed for use by baby pigs through 50 pounds. Calibrated to discharge 1.5 pints per minute at 40 psi.
Piglet Trainer Nipple
A special version of the Edstrom Piglet Nipple, it has a stainless steel trainer-screw built into the body. By turning in the screw, the nipple can be set to drip slowly, which helps teach baby pigs to find the water source in the pen. Use on reduced water pressures of 15 to 20 psi.
Wet Feeder Valve
High-capacity valve designed for vertical mounting in the feeder. Pigs are able to easily activate the valve by touching the stem with their nose, causing water to flow into the pan of the feeder. Factory calibrated to discharge 2 quarts per minute at 40 psi.
Wet Feeder Trainer Valve
A special version of the standard Wet Feeder Valve, this waterer incorporates the popular trainer-screw feature. By turning in the screw, the valve can be made to drip slowly, helping train young animals to find the water source in the feeder. Use on reduced water pressures of 15 to 20 psi.
Water Supply Components
The Pressure Reducer/Filter Station assures a gentle flow of clean water at 15 psi, which is the recommended operating pressure for all Edstrom nipple waterers. The pressure station consists of a reliable 8 to17 psi adjustable pressure regulator, a 200mesh flushing filter, and an outlet pressure gauge.
Replacement Parts
We also offer key replacement parts for all nipple waterers, including diaphragms, o-rings, retainer screws and stems.
